Ravensara essential oil has a slightly fruity aroma with a hint of medicinal scent. It may smell slightly similar to rosemary but it is much sweeter and delicate. Ravensara is endemic in the central and eastern regions of Madagascar as well as the Comoro Islands. The leaves, bark, and fruit of its various species are rich in aromatic essential oils. In total, there are approximately 30 species of Ravensara which can mostly be found in laurel forest habitat. Most of the species are large trees which can grow up to 30 meters at maturity whereas there have been cases of them extending up to 60 meters.
