Today’s essential oils can be used for a plethora of ailments and effects. Breathing can be improved, scarring reduced, your mood can be lifted, skin blemishes can be cleared, cuts can be healed… The list goes on and on. But what about using the effects of essential oils to improve something other than the human condition?

Do you have a smoker in the house? Has someone recently visited who smoked in your home, car, or office? There are essential oils that can be used to remove the odor left behind by a smoker.

Don’t Mask the Odor

You are doing nothing but masking the smell when you use air fresheners, incense, or if you light a scented candle in an attempt to eliminate smoky odor. What about more air? Rather than eliminating a smoky smell, it will simply be diluted gradually by increased ventilation. You might need to use more than one method, depending on how strong the odor is. Worse yet, if it is in your home, you’ll need to consider whether or not it has permeated soft areas like rugs, carpets, furniture, drapes, etc.

The Use of Essential Oils

Essential oils are extracted through a number of methods from plants, flowers, roots, stems, and leaves. These oils are highly concentrated. So, to get the full fragrance of a flower or plant, you have but to use a few drops. To remove smoke orders from your carpet, clothing, home, and car, essential oils are an eco-friendly method. Check out the following ways to remove the smell of smoke through the use of essential oils.

When Your Clothing Smells Smoky

When clothing gets smoky, and it happens all the time, the first step to removing odors is to give it a thorough cleansing in the washing machine. Add a few drops of citrus essential oils once the machine has filled with water. You should still use your laundry detergent as usual.

Get Smoky Smells Out Of Your Rug or Carpet

Follow these instructions for carpets or rugs that smell smoky:

  • 2 cups of baking soda in a container
  • Add several drops of citrus essential oil
  • Shake until thoroughly mixed
  • As you would use other carpet deodorizers, use this mixture (sprinkle on areas where smoke has permeated and let it settle for a few hours)
  • Vacuum until all traces of baking soda have been removed

Clearing the Air

First and foremost, you will need a nebulizing diffuser for this odor removal method. Into your diffuser, place 15 to 20 drops of the essential oil of your choice. For a refreshing, uplifting scent, lemon essential oils work well. To purify and deodorize, tea tree oil is a good choice. You can also, on your air filters, place a few drops of your favorite essential oil. With this method, aside from leaving a pleasant smell in the room, certain essential oils can also help kill microbes.

Essential Oils For Smoky Odors

There are several essential oils that can help fight against smoky odors. Lime essential oils can help purify both your spirit and mind while clearing the air. Lemongrass essential oils are not only invigorating and fresh, but the powerful aroma helps get rid of smoky smells.
