Essential oils are plant extracts used in some over-the-counter medications (Vick’s Vaporub), cleaning products (Pinesol), and pest control products because of their antifungal, antibacterial, and antimicrobial abilities. The food industry uses oils to preserve foods. Essential oils have been shown to be effective against migraines and nausea, and some may even be powerful enough to kill cancer cells in the colon, mouth, skin, and breast.
Many people only think of essential oils for relaxation, beauty, and personal care products. But with a world facing increasingly drug-resistant bacteria, many doctors, scientists, and even farmers, are trying to keep people and animals healthy with a variety of plant extracts. Are essential oils the new best way to fight infection and disease?
Several promising lab studies have been conducted. Scientists have found that certain oils can be used to counter the growing crisis of antibiotic-resistant “superbugs”. It’s one of the most important challenges the medical profession faces in modern time.
Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria
The over-use of antibiotics in both humans and animals has created “superbugs” that have become increasingly resistant to treatment. This threat to global public health will require action on the part of the medical community, the government, and the general population in order to solve it.
So, what’s being done? The agricultural industry is voluntarily reducing their use of antibiotics on cows and chickens; parents are no longer demanding their children receive antibiotics when it’s medically unnecessary; and researchers are finding that essential oils are showing promise as a viable alternative.
United States Department Of Agriculture Studies
USDA research has discovered that chickens who consume oregano oil were less likely to contract a common infection called ascites. Adding cinnamon and chili peppers to oregano assisted in poultry weight gain as well as preventing intestinal infections.
Even though essential oils have been shown to successfully treat animals, studies on humans have been mixed. However, early research has produced encouraging results. US research concluded that wounds healed more quickly when treated with tea-tree oil than with conventional medicine, even if staph-infected. A December 2013 report showed that a gel made with lemongrass oil reduced MRSA on human skin. Tea-tree oil was also effective as a hand sanitizer.
Scientists have found that using oils on their own and in combination with antibiotics, can fight numerous antibiotic-resistant strains of E. coli and other types of bacteria. Don’t, of course, expect the pharmaceutical industry to jump on board with this new retro method of treatment anytime soon. There is still, after all, big money to be made from chemicals and drugs, both new and old, commonly used to treat diseases and conditions.
