While summer is one of the most popular times of the year due to the hot weather, outdoor activities, and opportunities to travel, it can also be a season of allergies. Some essential oils that can be used to treat allergies include peppermint and eucalyptus oil. For those that suffer from summer allergies, understanding the causes is the first step towards getting rid of them.

Mold

Mold plays a key role in the allergies that some people will experience during late summer. Your immune system will overreact as mold spores are inhaled, and they will cause you to cough while making the eyes itch. Research has found a connection between mold and asthma, and those who are most susceptible to allergies resulting from mold are those who engage in outdoors activities where spores are carried by wind. You can reduce your exposure to mold by using dehumidifiers indoors, and staying inside whenever the presence of mold outside is at high levels.

Bees and Pollen

Pollen will differ from one area to another, but the one commonality that can be found with all types is that trees tend to yield it during spring. Grass will also produce pollen and ragweed will influence it as well. The presence of pollen is highest during summer on warm days which are breezy.

Bees, hornets, wasps and related insects can cause an allergic reaction if they sting you. During the summer months, when the weather is hottest, many people are outdoors enjoying hiking, barbecues, sports and other activities. This puts you in close proximity to bees which are pollinating flowers and increases the chances of stings, which can be life threatening to those who develop anaphylaxis, which is a dangerous reaction to certain allergens. Those who are allergic to bees who intend on being outdoors during the summer months should consider keeping epinephrine shots on their person.

Certain Fruits

There is nothing more refreshing than eating fruit during summer. Unfortunately, some individuals may develop a cross reaction due to pollens and certain spices. Allergy oral syndrome may develop which causes the mouth or tongue to itch. Fruits which can cause this condition include peaches, mangoes, cherries and apples, as well as pears and bananas. While the reaction will usually be moderate, it is best to speak with a doctor if you develop a reaction to learn what fruits you should avoid.

Poison Ivy

This is a very common allergen, especially in the United States. It tends to grow near watery areas such as streams, lakes or rivers. It can even be found in the backyards of many homes. Poison ivy is extremely adaptive and can grow in many different environments. It contains a sap which is resin like and it has chemicals referred to as urushiol.  Those who are exposed to the leaves will notice redness and intense burning and itching. Breakouts will occur within 72 hours of coming into contact with the plant. When outdoors during summer you should wear long sleeve shirts and pants, especially if you intend to go trekking in the bushes.
