Oh oh… you put essential oils in your diffuser and now you’re afraid you may have added too many drops. The room has become absolutely permeated with the scent of your essential oil. While a little is a good thing, a lot can sometimes be overwhelming, and even stifling.

Don’t get frustrated. If you have a favorite essential oil, or a recipe for a combination of several, it’s bound to happen sooner or later. While you may need to open a window and leave the room for a while this time, we can help you better control the amount of essential oils you put into your diffuser for next time.

How Many Drops Is Too Many Drops?

Truth be told, it’s an individual, personal choice as to how many drops of essential oils you should put into your diffuser. But let’s face it… way too many is just too many, no matter what. It may take a little bit of experimentation to discover where your comfort level is. Remember though that your comfort level may not be the same as for the guests you have coming over tonight. So take that into consideration, too.

Overdoing it can cause nausea and headaches in some people. So, beware. Save your sanity, save your money, and start slowly.

Determining Factors

There are a number of things to help determine how many drops of essential oil should go into your diffuser. As we said, personal preference has a lot to do with it. But the size of the room in question can matter greatly. Additionally, the type of essential oil you are using can have a huge effect on how aromatic it becomes.

To spread a peppermint scent throughout a room, you don’t need a lot. It’s a strong essential oil. But because it is milder, an essential oil like lavender may require more drops. With each oil you use, be a little conservative at first. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be fine.

Diffusing for Beginners

As we just said, start slowly. Keep thinking to yourself, “Less is more.” These are not your favorite ice cream toppings where “more” is awesome. These little bottles need just the right amount of care and respect. They are incredibly concentrated.

Start off by diffusing for 30 to 60 minutes with about 2 to 3 drops in your diffuser (of your favorite essential oil). See how you feel after that amount of time. If you get a headache, feel nauseous, or dizzy, you need to slow down. You’re moving too fast.

Because everyone is unique, 8 to 10 drops have been used by some people, even as beginners, and it lasts them all day. Others, because it’s a new experience, need to have a little bit of adjustment time.
