How many of us would like to retain a calmer demeanor in times of stress? But how can we effectively reduce our stress level?

Unfortunately, stress is an unavoidable part of our lives. It isn’t a matter of whether or not we’re going to encounter stress – it’s more a matter of when, where, and how we will react. Some stress is necessary as it helps us meet many of life’s challenges head-on. But it can also have an extremely detrimental effect on our well-being, particularly when we are overloaded.

Too Much Stress Is Unhealthy

This may seem like a painfully obvious statement. But did you know that too much stress can cause a reliance on drugs, overeating, and a reliance on alcohol? It can also cause medical conditions such as weight gain, heart disease, and hypertension. Surely there must be some healthy alternative to dealing with stress.

It’s Time to Take a Break

This can come in many forms. Some choose to take long, reflective walks through the wilderness. Others, the with the assistance of their favorite essential oils, take a relaxing soak in the tub or meditate to their favorite scent with the use of a diffuser. Yoga, meditation, walking, reading – all of these are ways to separate yourself from what’s causing stress and allow your brain to reboot.

Stop Being Such a Yes-Man (or woman)

It is perfectly okay for you to say no. Sadly, many of us have a problem with it. You may need to learn how to apply yourself in order to be firmer with a definitive “NO!” Saying no to someone we love or our boss at work will always be hard. But saying no will help lessen stress.

Have a Touchstone or a Lifeline

Is there someone in your life to whom you can always turn? It can be a friend, relative, therapist – someone with whom you feel safe and that you can say anything to. Don’t overuse them, but in times of extreme stress, this could be the one person that can help you through your situation.

Pet an Animal

It has now been proven that stroking an animal, such as a dog or a cat, can help relieve stress and calm people down. Having a pet is an added responsibility, but it can be the distraction that many of us need. And being able to snuggle with and pet it, in order to show love and de-stress, is a bonus.

Get Out and Have Some Fun

Or stay in and have some fun. The whole point here is to just enjoy yourself. Go on a cruise, play a game, horse around in the backyard with the kids. Whatever takes your mind off of what’s stressing you out and fills your brain with pleasure endorphins.

Hit the Gym

If you don’t have a gym membership, no problem. What’s important is to get some exercise. Run around the block, do some calisthenics, climb the stairs a few times, ride a bike, swim – yoga, in particular, is the go-to exercise for many. Your mind can be calmed by focused physical activity.

Just Get It All Out!

Stop bottling things up. Get angry! Laugh, cry, or yell, but do whatever it takes to get those feelings out. Eventually, you can learn how to express yourself in a more appropriate manner, but for now, just vent. Once the negative energy has been released from your system, you can get on with life.

Plants Guru has a full line of essential oils that you can use in your bathwater, in a diffuser, as a topical application – however you choose.
